Personal Security Guide, Your Best Resource for Security and Safety
Protecting your personal security is important. The U.S. Department of Justice has said that 99 % of us will be the victim of some crime and 75% will be the victim of several crimes. We have a better chance of being a crime victim than being in an auto accident.
When the statistics are broken down, depending on the area and time of day, the ratio of actual police officers assigned to crime prevention (patrolling neighborhoods, businesses, etc.) can be as low as one officer for every 3-4,000 citizens, or
greater.
Also, in an 8 or 12 hour shift an officer can only respond to so many calls. For every call officers have to set aside extra time for filling out reports.
I could give more statistics, but the bottom line is that although police officers deserve more credit than they get in many cases for a very stressful job, they are too often only available after the fact.
This means we all must be proactive in taking measures to protect our personal security. This includes securing your home by protecting points of entry, installing security cameras, alarms, etc.
A security camera video, for example, won't guarantee the capture of a criminal, but it's definitely a good tool for the police to use.
If a certain crook is already a suspect, your video may provide a key "break" for police.
Likewise, if someone burglarizes other homes after yours, the video may be that same "key" that helps capture someone fitting a description, and solves your burglary also.
